BEST congratulates the City of Vancouver on its decision to extend the Burrard Bridge Trial through to the end of the Olympics. An updated report from staff and Bridge Trial data has now been published. The numbers show that cycling is up approximately 25% over pre-trial traffic, while pedestrian traffic remains about the same. Vehicle traffic is about the same or up slightly.
Northbound travel times have decreased slightly during the trial, while southbound have increased or stayed the same. Interestingly, the largest increases in southbound travel time occur between 8 and 11 AM, while evening rush hour travel times are within one minute of pre-trial levels.
The complete statistics can be viewed here.
We encourage cyclists, pedestrians, transit users, and vehicle users to enjoy the new lanes as much as possible in the remaining weeks of the trial. Walking and cycling o few times a week does wonders for your health and outlook as you admire our beautiful scenery.
Don't forget to communicate your approval and good experiences of the trial to Council, Mayor Robertson and the engineering department. It's important that they receive positive feedback from Bridge users!
